Blend of Garnacha, Carignan, and Syrah with aromas of black cherry, plum, cocoa, spice, and licorice. On the palate, it is loaded with fresh red and black fruits, intermixed with minerals and spices. Good balance of rich fruits and smooth tannins with a long finish.
The riper and warmer 2015 Clos Figueres fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels and matured in French barriques for 14 to 16 months. It's powerful while keeping its poise and balance. A powerful red Priorat true to the vintage and Gratallops terroir.
4,525 bottles produced. 92+ RP.
- Christopher Cannan discovered the potential of the Priorat back in 1983 when he was given a bottle of the 1974 Priorat from the Scala Dei winery. At the time Scala Dei was the only single privately owned estate exporting the wines of Priorat.
- In 1988 Christopher met Alvaro Palacios where he enthusiastically explained the project to produce world class wines from old vineyards in the Priorat. At first Christopher was skeptical. The wine was excellent, but the price was high for an unknown product. A couple of years later Robert Parker “The Wine Advocate” published exceptionally high scores, and the trade finally took notice of what was happening in this remote corner of Catalonia.
- In July 1997, René Barbier showed Christopher and his wife Charlotte an abandoned vineyard just north of Gratallops called “Figueres” in honor of the 2 magnificent fig trees on the property. A grove of centuries old olive trees and a few rows of mostly 20 years old Carignan vines were recuperated but most of the remaining hectares had to be replanted. Christopher travelled to the Southern Rhône valley to visit a specialized nursery and privileged the local Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, a few Cabernet Sauvignon vines and a little Viognier.
- In early 2000 a handful of owners of adjacent vineyards proposed to sell their holdings to Clos Figueras making it a total of 22 hectares all in one piece of which 11 are planted. The remainder being olive trees, a small forest and slopes too steep to plant.
- With the 2001 vintage, Clos Figueres was awarded 96 points by Robert Parker, putting the estate rapidly in league with the top names of the fast emerging Priorat appellation. In the following years Clos Figueres was awarded no less than 94 points for every vintage with the exception of the 2005 with 96 points.
- Today 3 red wines and one white wine are produced : Clos Figueres from the old vines, Font de la Figuera Tinto from the vines planted back in 1998 and the recently launched Serras del Priorat, a more fruit driven wine for early consumption while maintaining all the classic Priorat characteristics. Finally, the Font de la Figuera Blanco from the “mistaken” Viognier. A total of between 30 000 and 35 000 bottles are made with single minded passion and commitment to the highest quality possible.
- The vineyard and olive groves have always been farmed with ecology in mind and are now officially certified organic.
